ProdromeNeuro™ — Omega-3 (DHA) Plasmalogen Precursor
Grey-matter / neuron support
Algae-derived DHA plasmalogen precursor. Supports synaptic function, cognition, and neuromuscular performance. Can be mildly stimulating, so we suggest before noon.
A two-part system for grey-matter and white-matter wellness, built on plasmalogen precursors developed by the neuroscientist who discovered them.
ProdromeNeuro™ and ProdromeGlia™ are dietary supplements developed by Dr. Dayan Goodenowe, PhD, the world's leading researcher on plasmalogens. They are not omega-3 fish oil. They are plasmalogen precursors — the raw biochemical building blocks your body uses to assemble plasmalogens, a special class of lipid that protects every cell in your brain, heart, lungs, eyes, and kidneys.
Adults who want to proactively support cognitive function, mental clarity, focus, memory, and neuromuscular performance through midlife and beyond — especially those layering membrane-level antioxidant support onto an existing omega-3, B-vitamin, and antioxidant foundation, or addressing a documented plasmalogen deficiency identified by ProdromeScan™ testing.
Grey-matter / neuron support
Algae-derived DHA plasmalogen precursor. Supports synaptic function, cognition, and neuromuscular performance. Can be mildly stimulating, so we suggest before noon.
White-matter / myelin support
Plant-derived oleic acid plasmalogen precursor. Supports white-matter integrity, signal transmission, and cardiac membrane composition. Often taken in the evening to support overnight repair.
Plasmalogens are the insulation inside every cell membrane — and after 40, you stop making them at the pace your body needs.
Your cells are wrapped in tiny envelopes called membranes, and the most important structural lipid inside those envelopes — particularly in your brain — is a class of fat called plasmalogens. Think of plasmalogens like the insulation in a high-performance wire: they make the signal travel faster and cleaner, and they soak up oxidative damage as a built-in antioxidant inside the cell membrane itself.
Your peroxisomes, the tiny organelles that build plasmalogens, start to slow down after about age 40. By your 60s, levels can be significantly depleted — and you cannot replace plasmalogens through diet alone. They are broken down in stomach acid before they ever reach your cells. A stable, orally bioavailable precursor is the only practical way to restore them.
We use both products together in our practice because they target two different parts of the nervous system. ProdromeNeuro™ supports grey matter and neurons — the spark plug that fires the signal. ProdromeGlia™ supports white matter and myelin — the electrician that maintains the wiring. Most clients benefit from both, although some begin with Glia first and layer Neuro in over time.
We chose Prodrome because the precursors were designed by the discoverer. Most plasmalogen molecules can't survive stomach acid because of an acid-sensitive vinyl ether bond. Prodrome's precursors use a regular alkyl bond — engineered to make it through the gut and into the bloodstream, where the body converts them into active plasmalogens independent of declining peroxisomal function. cGMP-manufactured in California, third-party tested, with plant- and algae-derived ingredients.

Multiple peer-reviewed studies show plasmalogen levels — especially DHA-containing plasmalogens — are significantly reduced in the brains and blood of older adults and in people with cognitive challenges.
Goodenowe et al., J Lipid Res 2007; Wood et al., 2011
In a 4-month investigational study (Jordan, Wood, Goodenowe, Front Cell Dev Biol 2022), 22 adults took escalating oral doses of the same DHA plasmalogen precursor found in ProdromeNeuro™. Blood plasmalogen levels rose dose-dependently, and oxidative stress markers (catalase activity, malondialdehyde) moved in a favourable direction.
A 2017 multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial (Fujino et al., n=328) showed 1 mg/day of purified plasmalogens for 24 weeks improved cognitive scores in adults with mild cognitive challenges. A 2020 follow-up (Adv Exp Med Biol) confirmed efficacy across MCI, mild-to-severe Alzheimer's, and Parkinson's.
A randomized placebo-controlled trial in healthy middle-aged adults (Hossain et al., 2020, mean age 46) showed 12 weeks of oral plasmalogen supplementation significantly increased composite memory scores — suggesting plasmalogens may support cognitive maintenance before any clinical decline.
A 2022 randomized placebo-controlled trial in healthy young athletes (Fujino et al., Front Cell Dev Biol) showed 4 weeks of 2 mg/day plasmalogens reduced negative mood states and improved mental concentration — possibly via G-protein-coupled receptor signalling, not just membrane structure.
In a ProdromeNeuro™-specific clinical trial presented at the 2021 Alzheimer's Association International Conference by Dr. Sheldon Jordan, 73% of adults with mild-to-moderate cognitive challenges experienced improved cognition, improved mobility, or both after four months. Mobility remained stable or improved in 82% of participants.
ProdromeNeuro™ contains DHA, a long-chain omega-3. At higher doses, omega-3s may add to the effect of blood-thinning medications (warfarin, apixaban, rivaroxaban, dabigatran, and similar). If you take any anticoagulant or antiplatelet medication, review this product with your prescribing physician before starting.
Pre-surgical considerations: discontinue plasmalogen supplementation 7–10 days before any planned surgery, in consultation with your surgical team.
If you take prescription medications — particularly for cardiovascular, neurological, or psychiatric conditions — please review the addition of any new supplement with your provider.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding: there are no safety studies in pregnant or nursing individuals. We do not recommend either Prodrome product during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Children and adolescents: not currently recommended due to lack of paediatric safety data.
Shellfish allergy: Prodrome products are plant- and algae-derived (no scallop or marine animal source). If you have a severe shellfish allergy and have reacted to phospholipid supplements in the past, discuss with your provider.
Mild GI effects: a small number of people report soft stools, mild reflux, or a faint fish-like aftertaste from the algae-DHA component. Taking with food typically resolves this.
