Most of the BDMC-specific research above is from cell and animal models. We discuss it because it explains the mechanism of action. It is not a substitute for human clinical trials in any specific condition, and we are not making clinical claims. Curcumin and its derivatives are well-tolerated in human use with a long traditional and modern dietary history.
Anticoagulants and antiplatelet medications: curcuminoids may potentiate the effect of blood thinners (warfarin, apixaban, rivaroxaban, dabigatran, clopidogrel, and others). Speak with your prescribing physician before adding.
Iron absorption: high-dose curcuminoids may interfere with iron absorption. If you are being treated for iron-deficiency anaemia, separate dosing from your iron supplement by several hours.
Diabetes medications: curcuminoids may modestly lower blood glucose. If you take insulin or oral hypoglycemics, monitor levels and discuss with your provider.
Pre-surgical considerations: discontinue at least 2 weeks before any planned surgery.
Broader drug interactions: curcumin affects multiple cytochrome P450 enzymes and can theoretically alter the metabolism of many prescription medications. Always review with your provider.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding: not recommended. Curcumin in dietary spice amounts is considered safe; concentrated supplemental doses have not been established as safe in these populations.
Gallbladder disease and bile-duct obstruction: curcuminoids stimulate gallbladder contraction. Avoid if you have active gallstones, bile-duct obstruction, or have had recent gallbladder symptoms.
GI sensitivity: a small percentage of people experience mild stomach upset or loose stools at higher doses. Reducing to 1 capsule daily and re-escalating slowly usually resolves this.
