Deep Sleep, REM, and Morning Clarity
Who Is This For?
This stack is designed for someone actively seeking to optimise their precision sleep. If this resonates with where you are right now, this is your starting point.
The Story
Sleep isn’t rest. Sleep is when your body does its most important work. Deep sleep is when growth hormone peaks, tissue repair accelerates, and the glymphatic system clears metabolic waste from the brain. REM sleep is when memories consolidate and emotional processing happens. Miss either of these stages consistently, and the downstream effects touch every system in your body. Here’s something most people don’t know: falling asleep requires your core body temperature to drop. It’s a physiological trigger. Glycine at 3g induces peripheral vasodilation—widening blood vessels in your hands and feet—which releases heat from your core, mimicking the natural temperature drop that signals sleep onset. Polysomnography (the gold standard of sleep measurement) confirmed significantly fewer awakenings in the glycine group. Magnesium L-threonate crosses the blood-brain barrier and directly supports deep sleep and REM architecture. Melatonin sustained-release maintains levels throughout the night for sleep maintenance. Together, this is a protocol built on the physics of sleep, not just a hope that something will make you drowsy.
What’s Inside
This stack contains 3 active ingredients, optimised for daily consistency. Total daily commitment: 3 caps + powder, taken All PM (1–2 hours before bed). Pair with: Precision Glycine™ 3g/day | Precision Creatine™ 5g/day | Precision Fibre™ 5–10g/day
Ingredient Dose Timing Role in This Formula Magnesium L-Threonate 2g (AOR or DFH NeuMag) 2g (approx 145mg elemental Mg) 1–2h before bed Brain-bioavailable magnesium—deep and REM sleep, HRV, cognitive readiness Glycine 3g (Precision Glycine™) 3g powder 30–60 min before bed Core temperature reduction via vasodilation, sleep fragmentation reduction Melatonin SR 1–3mg (AOR or CanPrev) 1–3mg 30–60 min before bed Sleep onset, sleep quality, circadian rhythm—SR for maintenance
The Evidence: Why Each Ingredient Is Here
Below is a summary of the research supporting each component. We’ve included formal citations so you can dig deeper if you want to.
Magnesium L-Threonate 2g
RCT (80 adults, 21 days, Oura ring measures): magnesium L-threonate group maintained sleep quality while placebo declined; significant improvements in deep sleep score, REM sleep score, light sleep time, HRV, readiness score, and activity balance. Also improved mood, energy, and alertness the following day. This is the only magnesium form shown to cross the blood-brain barrier in meaningful concentrations—standard magnesium forms don’t achieve brain magnesium elevation at supplement doses.
Glycine 3g
Glycine lowers core body temperature by dilating peripheral blood vessels—replicating the physiological drop that normally triggers sleep onset. RCT of collagen peptides (glycine-rich, 15g): polysomnography confirmed significantly fewer sleep awakenings (21.3 vs 29.3, p=0.028) and improved next-morning cognitive performance. Exceptionally well-tolerated with no known adverse effects at this dose.
Melatonin SR 1–3mg
Meta-analysis of 23 RCTs: melatonin supplementation significantly improved sleep quality scores. Sustained-release formulation maintains melatonin levels throughout the night rather than producing a single early spike. Use the lowest effective dose (1mg is often sufficient)—higher doses don’t proportionally improve sleep and may increase next-day grogginess.
Important Considerations
Before starting any new supplement, please review these clinical considerations. If you’re on prescription medications, share this page with your healthcare provider.
Melatonin SR
May cause next-morning drowsiness, particularly at higher doses. Avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you understand your individual response. Share with your prescribing physician if you are on blood-thinning medications, anticonvulsants, or immunosuppressant medications.
Magnesium L-Threonate
May have additive sedative effects when combined with benzodiazepines, muscle relaxants, or alcohol—do not combine. Very well tolerated at the doses used in this formula.
Important distinction
Precision Sleep is designed for physiological sleep difficulty without a significant stress component. If your sleep difficulty is primarily driven by anxiety, racing thoughts, or elevated cortisol, Precision Stress Management may be the more appropriate starting point. Not sure which fits? Frequently Asked Questions
How quickly does this work?
Glycine and magnesium L-threonate can improve sleep quality within 3-7 days. Melatonin effects on sleep onset appear immediately, but sustainable effects build over 1-2 weeks. Most people notice meaningful improvement in sleep quality within the first week, though it takes 3-4 weeks to know if this is truly transformative for you.
Can I use this every night, or should I cycle it?
All three ingredients are safe for nightly long-term use. Unlike some sleep aids, there’s no tolerance buildup documented with these compounds. Use nightly and assess if it’s working. If sleep improves and stays improved, you may eventually need to taper. But there’s no built-in reason to cycle.
I also take SSRI antidepressants. Is this safe?
SSRIs can affect sleep quality, which is exactly why this formula might be useful. However, melatonin can interact with some SSRIs, and magnesium can affect medication absorption timing. This is a pharmacist conversation, not a guessing game. Check with your prescribing physician or pharmacist before starting.
What if I wake at 3am and can’t fall back asleep?
This formula is designed for sleep onset and sleep architecture, not for middle-of-the-night awakenings. If 3am awakenings are your issue, that pattern usually points to cortisol dysregulation, blood sugar drops, or sleep apnea—not magnesium deficiency. This formula may help, but it’s worth exploring the root cause with your healthcare provider.
